TRLT Submits $1,000,000 NAWCA Grant for the Henry’s Fork

swansIn early March, Teton Regional Land Trust submitted their eighth North American Wetlands Conservation Council grant.  The Land Trust has been successful in receiving seven of these $1,000,000 grants that provide substantial funds for conservation easement acquisition and restoration and stimulate the local economy.  This application for the Henry’s Fork will protect and restore approximately 2,000 acres of the highest priority wetland and associate uplands habitat along the Henry’s Fork and lower South Fork of the Snake River.

Specific objectives are to: 1) Expand permanent land protection around core wetland conservation areas via perpetual conservation easements. Wetland conservation areas are protected public lands that support high breeding populations of waterfowl and wetland-dependent birds. All wetland conservation areas in the project area are designated Important Bird Areas by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the National Audubon Society; 2) Restore wetland function on two Idaho Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Management Areas within the project area; and 3) Restore and establish wetlands on key permanently-protected, private parcels adjacent to core wetland conservation areas. The outcome of proposed project activities supports permanent protection of the most important breeding, transitional and wintering habitat for wetland-dependent birds in eastern Idaho.
