Maximize Living Roots

You can increase the time that there are living roots in the soil through crop rotations, use of cover crop, or through the use of grasslands (native or pasture). Living roots help to stimulate and increase biological activity belowground and increase wildlife and pollinator populations aboveground. You can dig into these principles yourself through a quick Google search or by visiting the USDA website at www.farmers.gov/conservation/soil-health. We want to hear from you! Please let us know if you use any of these principles and what impact you have seen on the ground. Write a comment here, call us at 208-354-8939, or reach out to stewardship@tetonlandtrust.org.

We are celebrating Earth Day a couple of days early this year with a free community event. Please join us tomorrow, Saturday, April 20th, from 11am-2pm @tetoncountyfairgrounds Peruse booths hosted by local nonprofits and businesses to learn about what they are doing to prioritize caring for our planet and how you can help, participate in free activities and demonstrations, enjoy food from Captain Ron's Smokehouse and coffee from @wydahoroasters , take part in a mini-workshop on sprouts and microgreens, watch performances by young artists, and try to win some awesome raffle prizes. You can also sign up for local Earth Day service projects. Sign up for a service project and you'll get a free raffle ticket!

Maximize Soil Cover

Soil cover refers to either living plant material (growing crop, cover crop, or grassland) or mulch (crop residues, wood chips, tree or shrub prunnings, thatch, or compost). Maximizing soil cover helps to protect the soil from wind and water erosion, increases nutrient cycling, and helps with water retention. Stay tuned for more information regarding each of the 4 Principles of Soil Health! You can also dig into these principles yourself through a quick Google search or by visiting the USDA website at https://www.farmers.gov/conservation/soil-health. We want to hear from you! Please let us know if you use any of these 4 principles and what impact you have seen on the ground. Write a comment here, call us at 208-354-8939, or reach out to stewardship@tetonlandtrust.org. Celebrate the International Day of Forests today by getting out into the trees! As John Muir once said, "Between every two pine trees there is a door leading to a new way of life."

Teton Regional Land Trust has helped to protect 42,551 acres of wildlife habitat, farm and ranchlands, and scenic open spaces in eastern Idaho, much of which is considered forestlands.

Forests provide important habitat for the wildlife and bird species that call the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem home including black bears, Great Grey Owls, red squirrels, Clarks Nutcrackers, mountain lions, and pine martens, just to name a few.
